Governor Jennifer Granholm held a ceremonial bill signing event for the Complete Streets legislation Sept. 2, 2010 at the Capitol in Lansing. In recognition of the League’s efforts in helping to shape the bills over the last year and advocating for passage, League Board President Jeff Jenks and Chris Hackbarth, from the League’s Lansing staff, were invited to the ceremony and thanked by the Governor and the legislative sponsors for our involvement. During the ceremony, Governor Graholm recognized the League for its work. Also recognized were Michigan House Reps. Pam Byrnes, D-Lyndon Township, and Jon Switalski, D-Warren, as being the sponsors of the bill. The League was joined at the ceremony by a host of other groups that supported the legislation, including the Michigan Environmental Council, AARP, SEMCOG and the League of Michigan Bicyclists. This Complete Streets legislation matches up perfectly with the concepts in the League’s Prosperity Agenda and the Physical Design and Walkability core asset identified by the League’s Center for 21st Century Communities. So what we’re saying is, this is a big deal for the League and Michigan communities.
