The status of local agenda 21 in the Nigerian c...

This work is an attempt to highlight the attitude of Nigeria to the implementation of Agenda 21 Action Plan using one of the component administrative entities as a case study. It seeks to present the true position and elucidates attitudes that could be responsible for the observed attitudes. Innovations and dispositions are discussed in the light of the limited understanding of the principles enunciated in the Agenda 21 document which recommended prompt action from United Nations member states. The approach of the government and other stakeholders in Ondo State of Nigeria in embedding the principles of sustainable development into community development strategies was highlighted. This book therefore recommends the need for a focused directive from the Federal Government to the component state governments to commence implementation of LA21. The pursuit of stakeholder enlightenment through information dissemination, capacity development and the development of LA21 action plans were identified as major steps needed to remedy the situation.

Gendered Choices

This important book breaks new ground in addressing issues of gendered learning in different contexts across the (adult) life span at the start of the 21 st century. Adult learning sits within a shifting landscape of educational policy, profoundly influenced by the skills agenda, by complex funding policies, new qualifications and the widening/narrowing participation debate. The book is unique in highlighting the centrality of gendered choices to these developments which shape participation in and experiences of lifelong learning.Gendered Choices critically examines the continued expansion of a skills-based approach in areas of lifelong learning, including career decisions, professional identities and informal networks. It explores key intersections of adult learning from a gender perspective: notably participation, workplace learning and informal pathways.Drawing on research from a range of contexts, Gendered Choices demonstrates that for women the public/private spaces of work and home are often conflated, although the gendering of 'choice' has largely been ignored by policy makers. The themes of the book bring together some of these critical issues, explored through the multiple and fractured identities which constitute gendered lives. The book addresses these in an international context, with contributions from Canada, Spain and Iran that provide a wider international perspective on shared issues.

Teaching About Hegemony

Political progressives in Canada and the United States are deeply concerned by the manner in which their countries treat their poor. They are dismayed at the dismantling of the social welfare state, the weakening of public education systems and the grotesque and ever-growing inequality of wealth. To remedy this problem, citizens need to be more aware of how political ideology influences attitudes and actions, and they need to better comprehend the effects of hegemonic discourses in the corporate media and school curriculum. This book informs educators how to develop context-specific pedagogy that will help achieve a more enlightened citizenry and, as a result, a stronger democracy.Teaching about Hegemony: Race, Class and Democracy in the 21 st Century promotes a progressive agenda for teaching that is rooted in critical pedagogy, it explains why ideological critique is necessary in raising political consciousness, it deconstructs white, middle-class hegemony in the formal school curriculum, and it examines corporate media and school curriculum as hegemonic devices. It also covers recent theory and research about race, class and democracy and how best to teach about these topics. Combining theory and sociological research with pedagogical approaches and classroom narratives, this book is fundamental for progressive educators interested in developing a politically conscious, progressive and active citizenry hungry for a stronger civil society.
